Active Ageing

The concept of Active Ageing was launched at the 2nd World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid 8-12 April 2002, when world leaders agreed to implement a revised International Plan of Action on Ageing.

Since ageing will most likely place economic and social demands on all countries it is increasingly important to foster the concept of Active Ageing, whereby people are encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce health risks and ultimately increasing their quality of life.

Active Ageing also enables rather than disables older persons by promoting their involvement and participation in all aspects of society therefore creating a more positive image of ageing rather than one of isolation and dependence.
